It’s Spanish Lit month over at Winston’s Dad (see https://winstonsdad。wordpress。com/cat。。。), so it’s time to venture into the work of the avant-garde poet Federico García Lorca (1898-1936)。 I have been meaning to do this ever since I went to Spain, but it’s only recently that I discovered that the Penguin Moderns include a collection of his poetry, dialogues, and short prose。 At $1。99 AUD (£1GBP) It was breathtakingly cheap because it seemed only to be available for the Kindle。Needless to say, I It’s Spanish Lit month over at Winston’s Dad (see https://winstonsdad。wordpress。com/cat。。。), so it’s time to venture into the work of the avant-garde poet Federico García Lorca (1898-1936)。 I have been meaning to do this ever since I went to Spain, but it’s only recently that I discovered that the Penguin Moderns include a collection of his poetry, dialogues, and short prose。 At $1。99 AUD (£1GBP) It was breathtakingly cheap because it seemed only to be available for the Kindle。Needless to say, I am out of my depth when discussing modern poetry because we went no further than Four Quartets at university, but FWIW, here are my thoughts:It is not possible for me to read Lorca’s work without remembering that he was assassinated by Franco’s Nationalist forces early in the Spanish Civil War。 This is especially so with ‘In the Garden of Lunar Grapefruit’ which is prefaced by a quotation from Moral Advice by (the Castilian Chaucer) Pero López de Ayala :"Like a shadow our life slips away, never to return; nor shall aught of us or ours return"。In this short prose piece, with a sharp pain in his heart, he girds himself for battle with the gigantic dragon of Common Sense。 Only some pieces in this collection are dated and I found myself wishing that I knew when this one was written, to know just when it was that Lorca felt this intimation of death。To read the rest of my thoughts about this collection, please visit https://anzlitlovers。com/2021/07/01/t。。。 。。。more

Another light read。 Nothing amazing imo。

Amazing work, but I would have enjoyed and understood it more had it been assembled better。 The GR blurb reads that this is a collection of Lorca's unpublished works, but some uniformity of theme or format would have made it a better read。 There are passages (good ones, no doubt) that exist without any context, followed by an equally out-the-scene piece。 While I enjoyed these pieces in isolation, it'd have helped if they'd flowed in a unifying theme。 Amazing work, but I would have enjoyed and understood it more had it been assembled better。 The GR blurb reads that this is a collection of Lorca's unpublished works, but some uniformity of theme or format would have made it a better read。 There are passages (good ones, no doubt) that exist without any context, followed by an equally out-the-scene piece。 While I enjoyed these pieces in isolation, it'd have helped if they'd flowed in a unifying theme。 。。。more

Unremarkable。 He writes so much other, better stuff which are classics for all time。 Don’t really understand the inclusion of this selection in the Penguin Modern Classics boxset。

Curious poetry with repeated themes of the moon, trees, gypsies and forbidden fruit。 With equally curious drawings。

These little books by Penguin are great。 They weigh very little and fit in the inside pocket of my jacket so I can take them almost anywhere。 The Lorca volume is a delight。 His poems have a quality of great mystery。 The short prose and theatrical pieces here are extremely cryptic。 But the beauty always shines through。 These poems are poignant enough translated into English but I am wondering what they must be like in Spanish。 I think I know enough Spanish to be able to read them in the original These little books by Penguin are great。 They weigh very little and fit in the inside pocket of my jacket so I can take them almost anywhere。 The Lorca volume is a delight。 His poems have a quality of great mystery。 The short prose and theatrical pieces here are extremely cryptic。 But the beauty always shines through。 These poems are poignant enough translated into English but I am wondering what they must be like in Spanish。 I think I know enough Spanish to be able to read them in the original language and I now feel strongly inclined to try。 。。。more

Black snail white snail: ant sings a song of truth, having seen the stars above, the wind smiles and answers back, dancing through the poplar grove。

I bought this book for three reasons; 1。 The title 2。 the colour of the cover 3。 It was 5$ How serendipitous of a read! This was a little jewel! I loved hearing about the ant who saw the stars and of Tamar's heartbreaking stories。 While I was reading this at work my boss was telling me about the history of the poet and I am just so intrigued and look forward to read more! I hope to someday learn enough spanish to read the original poems, though it has been translated beautifully。 I bought this book for three reasons; 1。 The title 2。 the colour of the cover 3。 It was 5$ How serendipitous of a read! Give it a goWeird is probably most people's thoughts and rightly so。 You might say "anyone could write this jibberish!" Try it, I bet you cant。 I loved the snail and the frogs! ! People no longer read poetry much less write any as was demonstrated by my kindle insisting on changing the word snail to email。 A sad sign of the times perhaps? Please try this。 You just might like it。。 Give it a goWeird is probably most people's thoughts and rightly so。 You might say "anyone could write this jibberish!" *Score: 7。5/10*This is a very short collection of different plays, essays, and poetry by the author, which all have a central theme regarding death and nature and the link of beauty to the life and death cycle。I have to say initially that I am not much into poetry, as its never been something I can connect with personally much, but I also admit I didn't try much of it so maybe with time I can learn to like it more。 Most of this collection is poetry, which I managed to appreciate in general, but *Score: 7。5/10*This is a very short collection of different plays, essays, and poetry by the author, which all have a central theme regarding death and nature and the link of beauty to the life and death cycle。I have to say initially that I am not much into poetry, as its never been something I can connect with personally much, but I also admit I didn't try much of it so maybe with time I can learn to like it more。 Most of this collection is poetry, which I managed to appreciate in general, but given my personal taste its not my favorite part (though seems really solid for those who love poetry and its written very nicely)There were only a handful of plays and essays, but those were really fantastic。 The author has a beautiful command on language, being able to paint beautiful and haunting scenery at the same time with very few words。 The play about the two snails in particular was a highlight, really homing in the theme of nature, life, death, and God。 His topics are very existential so if that is your kind of topic I would definitely recommend。 This collection serves well as an appetizer or a demo, so I am now definitely going to attempt this author's other plays。 There is not much content here, but the value for content offered is definitely worth it。 。。。more

Sweet little bookNot really into poetry and I think something was probably lost in translation。 It was worth a read and has inspired me to think about reading some more poetry。

Some really nice poems in between a few odd ones, this made me curious to read more from FGL。

Another book of poetry, written in a language other than English, which somehow magickally retains its rhyme scheme and metre when translated into English。 Remarkable。。。

These £1 books are great at giving an insight into authors you'd normally never consider, and Federico Garcia Lorca is, to me, an excellent example of this。 Brilliantly colourful language and descriptive works。 These £1 books are great at giving an insight into authors you'd normally never consider, and Federico Garcia Lorca is, to me, an excellent example of this。 Brilliantly colourful language and descriptive works。 。。。more

Weird mix of unusual poetry and very short narrative。 Sadly, not for me。

A nice little introduction to Garcia Lorca …“… The two maundering frogssit there like sphinxes。One of them asks:“Do you believe in eternal life?”“Not I”, the blind, maimed frogreplies with great sadness。 “Then why did we tellthe snail to believe?”“Because … I don´t know why”, says the blind frog。“I swell with emotionon hearing the convictionwith which my children call outto God from the ditch …”

The Dialogue of Two Snails is a collection of poems and (very) short stories of Federico García Lorca。I'm not a big fan of poems in general, but I'll give them a go every once in a while。 Some of the ones in this book was enjoyable, and I enjoyed the snail stories。 Overall though, I wasn't impressed。Two stars。 The Dialogue of Two Snails is a collection of poems and (very) short stories of Federico García Lorca。I'm not a big fan of poems in general, but I'll give them a go every once in a while。 Some of the ones in this book was enjoyable, and I enjoyed the snail stories。 Overall though, I wasn't impressed。Two stars。 。。。more

A fun and irreverent collection of poems from the second Spanish Republic。 Its a shame that most were published posthumously as Lorca had the bad luck to be in nationalist territory in 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War, so he was an early casualty of the Fascist terror。My favourite is the one about the pompous Civil Guard officer。
